The Courtroom
Before a discussion about the procedures of a trial, take a moment to review the sketch of a typical courtroom below. Knowing the stages of the trial is one hurdle for someone outside the inner workings of the criminal justice system, but the physical structure of the courtroom itself can be intimidating. Often victims and witnesses are nervous not only about having to testify but about where to go when they get inside the courtroom and who else will be present.
It is important to know that upon arriving at the courthouse, all entrants must generally pass through some level of security clearance. This can even be as stringent as airport-like security screenings. For victims this first contact with the court can be intimidating and anxiety-provoking and they should be prepared for this ahead of time.
