Module 2
Overview of the Criminal Justice System

Arraignment

Once charges have been filed by either a grand jury indictment or an information, defendants are again advised of the charges against them in a procedure called an arraignment. Generally, the defendant will enter a plea – guilty or not guilty – at that time. The issue of bail and/or pre-trial release conditions may be revisited during this arraignment, especially if the charges filed differ from those of which the defendant was initially advised.
