How Accurate Language About Sexual Assault Supports Victims in the Criminal Justice System

Conclusion

The language we use to speak and write about sexual assault impacts victims in their recovery and as they navigate the criminal justice system. Inaccurate language about sexual assault perpetuates myths about sexual assault that advocates have long worked to eradicate in society. Accurate language will help more victims successfully navigate the criminal justice system and suffer less harm while doing so. Helping others recognize language that is inaccurate in a simple task every one of us can engage in in both our personal and professional lives that will make a difference in society’s responses to sexual violence.
