Module 6
Considerations for Advocacy on Behalf of Victims from Vulnerable Populations

Advocating for Immigrant Victims of Sexual Assault

Advocates working with immigrant victims should be aware of the policies of local law enforcement and the criminal justice system regarding cooperation with immigration officials so they can be prepared to answer victims’ questions.

Advocates should be alert to clients’ immigration issues for which they may need the counsel of an immigration attorney. (These issues are discussed in Module 8).  Where appropriate, advocates should assist victims in consulting with an immigration attorney before engaging with the criminal justice system or during their navigation of the criminal justice process.  As this area of the law requires expertise, having relationships with local immigration attorneys is important to help victims obtain this advice and/or representation swiftly. (Tips for creating relationships with local attorneys is discussed in Module 8).
