Legal Momentum has been closely following the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, and to the allegations put forward by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and others that Judge Kavanaugh raped and sexually harassed them. Today, Americans turn their attention toward Capitol Hill as Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Prior to this hearing, Legal Momentum was invited to submit a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding the hearing.

The National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence (NTF) is the leading organization advocating for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) at each reauthorization, and for its initial passage in 1994. Until now, VAWA has always been a bipartisan effort. This year, NTF has been actively working with both parties in Congress to reauthorize VAWA before it is set to expire on September 30, 2018.

“What is happening? This is a posting for the same job as mine and it pays $10,000 more than I make?” That is the question I posed to my supervisor more than 20 years ago as a young Black female lawyer in what was considered a high-paying job in New York City. There was no good answer given, so I applied for the job. This was the first time I discovered the issue of pay inequity for Black women, and unfortunately, I went on to discover many examples throughout my career.

On Wednesday, March 21, the Senate voted overwhelmingly, 97-2, to pass FOSTA-SESTA, the anti-trafficking bill that modifies Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. The bill will enable survivors of online commercial sex trafficking to sue the websites that facilitate this evil. It now goes to the President’s desk in the White House.
