This Workplace Is a DV-Free Zone Domestic Violence Model Policy

If you are being watched, leave now!

Legal Momentum’s “This Workplace Is a DV-Free Zone” Challenge aims to make all workplaces safe and accommodating for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.

The Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence reported that 21 percent of full-time employed adults were victims of domestic violence and 74 percent of those individuals had been harassed at work. Domestic violence is so pervasive that many states have enacted laws that entitle victims to certain employment rights. You can find our State Law Guides to workplace rights here.

If your employers do not already have a domestic violence accommodation policy (and 65% don’t), ask them to adopt Legal Momentum’s Model Domestic Violence Policy.

Legal Momentum’s model domestic violence workplace policy is streamlined, easily understandable, and easy to implement. The policy protects victims, their co-workers, and employers. The policy helps employers handle situations where an employee is a victim—or a perpetrator—of domestic violence, and discusses:

  • Protection from Discrimination;
  • Time Off and Other Reasonable Accommodations;
  • Access to Benefits;
  • Addressing Performance Issues Stemming from Employee’s Status as a Victim of Domestic Violence or a Related Crime;
  • Responding to Employees Who Threaten or Commit Domestic Violence or a Related Crime;
  • Handling Complaints and Disciplinary Action;
  • Ensuring Confidentiality;
  • Trainings to Educate Employees and Management about the Policy;
  • Access to Unemployment Benefits
