Module 4
Victim Restitution and Compensation

Other Options

If restitution and compensation do not cover a victims’ total out-of-pocket costs related to their victimization, or if victims wish to seek compensation for pain and suffering, victims must pursue a civil legal action, in civil court or small claims court. Victims can seek remedies through a civil legal action even if they receive restitution and/or compensation.  A civil action is important to consider because it does not require victims’ cooperation with law enforcement nor the conviction of the perpetrator. Module 9 explains civil processes.
